Former cricketer Yuvraj Singh, the hero of the 2011 World Cup, believes that Team India will definitely qualify for the semi-finals of the World Cup this time. Yuvraj, who was present at Vic’s Cheer Anthem program regarding the upcoming global tournament, said that it is wrong to call Team India chokers, we have won three World Cups. Sukant Saurabh had a special conversation with Yuvraj Singh about the upcoming World Cup, here are the highlights:
Is there any area in the current India team that they need to specifically focus on?
I think our team had less game time, we have not played many ODIs because now there are more T20s. The good thing is that all the middle-order batsmen have come into form. Surya is in form, Shreyas is back in form, KL scored a century after coming back from injury, Ishan has been doing well for a long time, it is great. It is a headache for the captain and coach to decide whom to feed and whom to make sit. Bumrah has returned to the team at the right time. So I think our combination has become good. However, we have to prepare a balanced combination in the first two-three matches. Also, we have to see according to the wicket whether more spinners or fast bowlers will play.
In the last three ODIs we played against Australia, we saw that all the pitches were flat. Will we see similar pitches in the World Cup also?
-I think there will be similar pitches, high scoring matches. The second thing is that the grounds in India are also small. Now the new rule that has been made, in which there are five fielders within 30 yards and two new balls, definitely gives more benefit to the batsmen. Certainly all the matches will be high scoring and wherever there is a low scoring match, I feel that we now have bowlers who can defend it.
Every country that has hosted the World Cup since us in 2011 has become champion. Will we be able to continue what we started this time?
-According to me we should not take this kind of pressure. If you want to win the World Cup, you will have to defeat every team. You have to be the best team. If you look at the 1983 World Cup, we beat the best team, West Indies. If you see in 2011, we defeated Australia, the then best team. If you want to win this World Cup, you will have to defeat the best team. According to me, the semi-finals will be a high-pressure match because the format is different. There will be pressure from a good team in that match, we have to win that pressure match. However, by then we will have played 10-11 matches already so we will have enough game time. I have full hope that Team India will qualify for the semi-finals.
We have not won a single ICC trophy for the last 10 years. Our team is not becoming chokers. What points will Team India need to focus on in pressure matches?
-I have a completely opposite opinion on this. A bran is someone who has never won a tournament and has lost every pressure match. We are a team that has won three World Cups. We have lost twice after reaching the finals. There is no doubt that for once the Pakistani team performed very well. And when we lost to Australia in the final of the Test Championship this time, we had only four days to prepare after the IPL. At the same time, Australia had already played a test match there. No one pays attention to these things, how much time was given for preparation, How much game time did the team get? There is no doubt that Team Australia played very well. I don’t think we’re chokers. I am not denying that we have not won any major tournament for a long time. But there is no team which has performed like this consistently. I understand that we are Indians so we will talk about Team India, but I think our team has the potential to win big matches.
How much role do all-rounders play in victory in such global tournaments? Who will prove to be the X factor of the team this time?
– I think Hardik and Jadeja will be seen making big contributions to the team this time. The performance of both of them will be very important for the success of our team.
