Anil Kumble Plays Down Injury Concerns In India Team
India coach Anil Kumble played down injury concerns that have, of late, forced changes in the playing 11. India have had to field six different opening combinations since the West Indies series in July-August due to injuries and form.
KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan were injured during the New Zealand and England series. Murali Vijay had suffered an injury during the West Indies series
One of the features of the series has been the trial of DRS in a Test series in India. Kumble, who is also ICC cricket committee chairman, said he would not like to keep the scores but said it’s been a good experience so far. “It’s been an experiment that has been happening in the series. It’s been really good. The important thing is if we have taken the right call at that point of time.”
While the Indian team is in a dominating position in the series, there are a few concerns like opener Murali Vijay being tested by the short balls, after a brilliant start at Rajkot.
But, Kumble backed his player and said he was among his most consistent batsmen. “It is not a concern (short ball) for Vijay. A big score is just around the corner for him.”
An Act Of Bravery
Lasith Malinga is one of the leading white-ball fast bowlers in world cricket. He was at his prime a few years back and one of the best exponents of the yorker. In fact, he had an excellent bouncer as well along with a deceptive slower one. The ace Sri Lankan pacer could well be termed as a complete T20 bowler.
While Malinga has foxed plenty of batsmen with his searing yorkers, in 2012, there was one bouncer which was too hot to handle for Rilee Rossouw. Playing the first season of the Sri Lankan Premier League, Rossouw was playing for Basnahira Cricket Dundee and Malinga turned out to play for Ruhuna Royals.
Malinga bowled a 141 kmph bouncer which in the 13th over when Rossouw was batting on 31. The left-hander tried to hook the ball but it hit him flush on the nose. Malinga was quick to apologize and ran up to Rossouw who was bleeding. He was taken off subsequently and received three stitches. It could’ve been very nasty if the ball would’ve sneaked through and hit his eyes and Rossouw was saved by the helmet grill.
