Sports Desk, New Delhi. The Sri Lankan team has come against India in the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai with a black band on its arm. Sri Lanka has done this to pay tribute to superfan Percy Abeysekera. Percy Abeysekera died on Monday at the age of 87 following a prolonged illness.

Sri Lanka Cricket Board posted on its X handle and wrote that Sri Lankan players will wear a black armband. Sri Lankan players will pay tribute to the team’s superfan, late Percy Abeysekera.

The board wrote, “Sri Lankan players will wear black armbands. Sri Lankan players will wear black armbands during the match against India to pay tribute to the team’s superfan, the late Percy Abeysekera.”

Popular in other countries too

The board further wrote, “Abeysekera was an integral part of the game of cricket in Sri Lanka and played a vital role from the stands in supporting and motivating the players. His immense legacy extends beyond Sri Lanka and his name is fondly remembered among cricket lovers. It will always be imprinted.”

Got popularity from 1996 World Cup

Let us tell you that fans know Percy Abeysekera as ‘Uncle Percy’. He was famous for waving the country’s flag on the field to support the Sri Lankan team . He was present in the stadium at almost all Sri Lankan matches since the 1979 World Cup.

It is noteworthy that during every match of Sri Lanka in the 1996 World Cup, Abeysekera was famous for waving a big Sri Lankan flag, patting the players on the back and even accompanying the players to the dressing room.
